Can you learn AI for free? Yes, here's the path

Yes, you can learn AI for free. Anthropic and OpenAI both run free courses, Claude and ChatGPT both have free plans, and I have a free YouTube channel full of tutorials. The information is not the expensive part.

What free doesn't give you is someone looking at your setup when it breaks, and a reason to finish. That's the gap, and it's worth knowing where it sits before you spend a cent.

I run a paid AI membership, so I have an obvious interest here. I'd still rather you start with everything below, because it's good.

Where do you start if you want to learn AI for free?

Start with the free plan of one tool and one free course from the company that makes it. Pick Claude or ChatGPT, not both, and do the course while you use the tool on a real task from your week.

If you'd like help choosing, Claude vs ChatGPT for small business covers how I decide. Either choice is fine for a first month.

What are the free courses from Anthropic?

Anthropic's free learning home is Claude Academy, which describes itself as "free courses, tutorials, and use cases from Anthropic's education team."

The best starting point for most women running a business is Claude 101. The course page shows it as free to register, and the curriculum covers your first conversation, getting better results, projects, artifacts, skills, connecting your tools and research. It finishes with a certificate of completion.

If you searched something like "what is the primary difference between projects and skills", those are two separate lessons in Claude 101. I also explain both in Claude AI for beginners: projects, connectors and skills.

Claude Academy also lists AI Fluency, a longer course about how to think and work with AI. It's a good second step once you've used the tool for a few weeks.

What are OpenAI's free courses?

OpenAI Academy has free, self-paced courses. OpenAI's own help page says so directly: Academy courses are free, and you sign in with a ChatGPT account to enrol and save your progress.

For a beginner, the first three are the ones: AI Foundations (60 to 75 minutes), Applied AI Foundations (75 to 90 minutes) and Agents and Workflows (75 to 90 minutes).

The help page also says the badges and certificates of completion are not certifications. Fine by me. Nobody hires an AI strategist from a badge, and you're not doing this for a badge.

What do the free plans of Claude and ChatGPT actually include?

Enough to learn on. Both companies change this regularly, so check the pages linked here before you decide anything.

Per Claude's pricing page, the Free plan is $0 and lists chat on web, desktop and mobile, searching the web, creating files and running code, memory across conversations, connecting your apps and tools, Artifacts, and Claude Design, Slides and Docs.

Per ChatGPT's Free tier FAQ, free users can search the web, analyse data, upload images or files, use GPTs and create images. The same page says everyday text chats are unlimited subject to safeguards, while uploads, image generation and data analysis have separate limits. It also says ads may appear on the Free tier in certain countries, and that creating new GPTs isn't available on personal accounts.

The limits will run out some afternoon, usually mid-task. That's normal and it's the free plan doing its job.

What I watch on YouTube vs what I'd skip

My own YouTube channel is free and has step-by-step tutorials on Claude, ChatGPT and building workflows for a business. Watch with the tool open in another window. If you only watch, you'll feel like you've learned something and you won't have.

Skip anything with a thumbnail promising you'll replace your whole team by Friday. If a video can't show you the actual screen and the actual output, close it.

What can't free learning give you?

Three things, and they're the same three every time.

Feedback on your setup. A course shows you a clean example. Your files are messy, your tool is on a different plan, and your version looks nothing like theirs. Nobody on a free course can look at yours.

Someone to ask when it breaks. I once spent three hours on an automation that should have taken twenty minutes. Three hours. I wasn't missing information. I was missing a person to say "move that step up."

A reason to finish. A free course has no one waiting on you. Nobody notices when you stop at lesson four, so it is very easy to stop at lesson four.

Whether those three are worth paying for depends on whether information or implementation is your blocker. I've written the full test in is an AI membership worth it, so I won't repeat it here. If you want the format comparison, AI community vs AI course covers it.

Try this in the next 15 minutes

  1. Open the free plan of Claude or ChatGPT.
  2. Pick one real task from this week, such as replying to a tricky client email or planning next month's content.
  3. Do it with the tool, start to finish.
  4. Write down every point where you got stuck or weren't sure what to do next.

That stuck list is your answer. If the gaps are "I didn't know what to ask", the free courses will fix them. If the gaps are "I don't know why it's doing that with my files", you need a person.

Quick answers

Are free AI certificates worth anything?

They show you finished a course, which is worth something to you. OpenAI says its Academy badges and certificates of completion are not certifications. Treat Claude 101's certificate the same way: proof of finishing, not a qualification.

How long will the free courses take?

OpenAI lists 60 to 75 minutes for AI Foundations and 75 to 90 minutes for the next two. Anthropic's Claude Academy lists AI Fluency at 14 lessons and about 4 hours. Add the time you spend practising on your own work, because that's where the learning happens.

Will the free plans stay the same?

No. OpenAI's own FAQ says the default model and available limits can change over time, and Anthropic's pricing page is the live source for Claude. Check the pages above before you plan around a specific feature.

When free stops being enough

If you've done the courses and still have the thing sitting on your list since March, that's what Wright Mode is for: a monthly live build where we make something together, fortnightly co-working and Q&A where you bring what's broken, and a private community that answers in writing. You get someone to ask, and a reason to finish.
