The best AI course for a small business owner is the cheapest one that teaches the tool you actually use, and for most people that starts with a free one. Pay for a course when you can name the gap it fills. Join a community when the information is not the problem and nothing is getting built.
I run a paid AI membership, so I have an obvious interest here. That is why most of this page is about courses I do not sell, with prices and lengths I checked on their own pages on 23/10/2026.
What are your options for AI training?
There are five kinds, and they fail in different places. Free training from the AI companies, free small-business training, marketplace courses, a live short course from a training provider, and communities.
| Option | Cost | Format and length |
|---|---|---|
| Free from an AI company, e.g. Claude 101 | Free to register | Self-paced online, 19 curriculum entries, ends with a certificate of completion. The page does not state a length. |
| Free small-business training, e.g. US Chamber of Commerce CO— AI training | Free | Online, self-paced, about 30 minutes, with a certificate and web badge. Google is listed as a supporter. Pitched at US small businesses. |
| Marketplace course, e.g. Google AI Essentials on Coursera | US$49 a month after a 7-day trial (US and Canada price) | Self-paced online. The header says 4 hours to complete, the description says under 10. Shareable certificate from Google. I did not check the Australian price. |
| Short course from a training provider, e.g. TAFE Queensland, AI for Business Owners | A$150 full fee | 4 hours in a teacher-led online virtual classroom, Tuesday 5pm to 9pm from 10 November 2026. |
| Community or membership, e.g. Wright Mode | Recurring, see the plans on the membership page | Live monthly build, fortnightly co-working and Q&A, and a private community. Built around live help on your own work, not a syllabus. |
Prices move and so do start dates, so check the linked page before you pay. This isn't every course out there. It's one honest example of each kind, so you can see what each type gives you.
Which AI training is free?
More than you would think. The AI companies run their own courses, and they are good.
Claude 101 is free to register and covers a first conversation, projects, skills and connecting your tools. The US Chamber of Commerce training is about 30 minutes, and it is aimed at US small businesses, so Australian readers may find the examples a stretch. I wrote up the full free path, including OpenAI's courses and what the free plans of Claude and ChatGPT include, in can you learn AI for free.
Start here. Thirty minutes to a few hours costs you nothing, and it tells you quickly whether you need more.
When is a paid course worth it?
When you can finish this sentence: "I would use AI for ___, and I do not know how to start." A paid course earns its fee if it covers that one blank in a sensible order.
Take Google AI Essentials on Coursera. It is a beginner course with a shareable certificate from Google, and the page says it is US$49 a month after a 7-day trial in the US and Canada. Its own pages disagree slightly on length (4 hours in the header, under 10 in the description). Even at the long end, one month of fees covers it if you finish. That is the catch with every paid course. You pay for the finishing, not for the content.
A live short course is a different product. TAFE Queensland's AI for Business Owners is A$150 for 4 hours in a teacher-led online classroom, with a set start date. You get a teacher in a room and a fixed evening. You do not get anyone looking at your business afterwards.
What does a community give you that a course does not?
Someone looking at your actual setup. That is the whole difference.
Most women I talk to have already bought a course. Two modules in, their setup looked nothing like the tutorial and the tab is still open somewhere. A community is built for that moment, because you bring the half-broken thing and someone helps you fix it. It is also messier. There is no tidy progress bar, and nobody hands you a syllabus. AI community vs AI course goes through that trade-off in full.
How do you choose?
Run these five checks in order.
- Have you used the tool at all? No: do a free course first.
- Can you name the task? No: a structured course, because you need the map.
- Does your business look like the examples? A US-focused course will teach a lot of the same thinking, but check the examples fit your country and trade.
- Have you finished courses before? If you have a graveyard of half-done ones, buy live help, not another recording.
- What do you need at the end? A certificate means a course. A working system means live help.
Whatever you buy, check when it was last updated and what the tool on screen looks like against the one you will open. AI products change faster than recorded modules.
Try this in 15 minutes
Open one free plan of Claude or ChatGPT and pick a real task from this week, such as a client email you have been avoiding. Do it start to finish with the tool and write down every point where you got stuck.
Stuck on "what should I ask?" means a course will help. Stuck on "why is this doing that with my files?" means you need a person.
Quick answers
Is there a free Google AI course for small business owners?
Google is a supporter of the US Chamber of Commerce's free training, but the Chamber provides it, not Google, and it is pitched at US small businesses. Google's own AI Essentials course sits on Coursera and needs a Coursera subscription after a 7-day trial.
Do I need a certificate?
Only if an employer, tender or client asks for one. The Chamber training, Claude 101 and Google AI Essentials all offer completion certificates. They show you finished, not that your business runs better.
Can I learn AI from a short live class?
Yes, if a few hours with a teacher is what has been missing. Check the date, the time zone and what happens when you get stuck afterwards. How long does it take to learn AI covers what to expect past the first class.
Is an AI membership worth paying for after a course?
It depends on whether information or implementation is your blocker. Is an AI membership worth it has the seven checks I would run before you pay anyone, me included.
Where Wright Mode fits
Wright Mode is for the stage after the course. It has a live Build with Brooke each month, fortnightly Co-Work + Q&A where you bring your own work, a private community and a set of templates. If you have the information and nothing is shipping, the fastest fix is working on your own setup with someone to ask.
